Eventually it was proved in the 19th century that this is mathematically impossible. I think Ross got the expression “squaring the circle” eventually right in the interview, but transcript still has it backward. Throughout centuries many of them worked on the problem of constructing a square with the same area as a fixed given circle, with the constraint that one can only use ruler and compass. Mathematicians are also quite familiar with the experience of relentless suffering tied the hope of collecting a few hedons in the form of theorems at some future point. So while there are times of ‘suffering’ when a child ill, or in some situation of difficulty the primary experience, I believe for most people is the opposite of suffering-the joy of doing the most caring, loving meaningful thing they will ever do. The overwhelming joy of being able to give and help a small child is something parents know every day. I have often heard people say that the best part of their lives was when their children were young, and they were young with them. Raising children is one of the most meaningful, perhaps the most meaningful activity for a great share of humanity, probably for a greater share of women than men. It can also come from social conditions such as slavery, humiliating poverty, imprisonment, deprivation of freedom, torture by an enemy,- and also from religious conditions like a sense of abandonment by God. Suffering comes from loneliness, meaninglessness, real physical pain, a sense of emptiness despair, depression. It is difficult, troublesome, worrisome, involves sacrifice of time and great effort, but I would not call it ‘suffering’, Suffering is something quite different as I understand it. The idea that raising children is ‘suffering’ seems to me in some way a mis-categorization. I found the basic premise of the beginning of this discussion contradictory to my own experience.
